Many Thanks to Youthful Volunteers!
Yes, the youth of today do care about something other then themselves. We witnessed this after months of preparation, the culmination of effort on the part of the University Schools, the teachers and the students. Clean, a great fun time, The Bulldog Bash Bowl-A-Thon, was held at the Highland Park Lanes on May 23, 2003 from 6:00-10:00 P.M. whose purpose was for community service for the students and raising funds to help families that have children with cancer. Zac’s Legacy Foundation was the grateful recipient of the student's efforts that totaled $3,172.31. This event was treated as a school function with teachers participating and supervising, even the Principal of the school was there.
Mr. Clay "The Balloon Man", a guest at this event, spoke to the students and said that so many people have the wrong impression of the youth of our day, but there are some that care and do make a difference in society. He said he was real proud of what the students had accomplished.
John Carlson, the father of Zackery Allen Carlson spoke and said how proud he was of the student's accomplishments. The Zac’s Legacy Foundation was formed in memory of little Zac who died of the cancer treatments at the age of 2 ½ years old.
The students went to businesses and gathered prizes for a drawing. To enter each student brought in at least $50.00, many brought more. There were prizes for the ones bringing in the most money, the winning team outfits, best team bowlers and many more.
One student came up to John after it ended and told him that she was so glad that they, the students, decided to be a part of this activity and that they had learned so very much about caring for others and working together. They want to do this next year too!
Special guests for the evening were the Olsen family. 5 year old Haleigh Olsen has been undergoing treatment for way over a year after being diagnosed with Wilmes disease. Treatment involved surgery to remove her kidney and months of chemotherapy. Haleigh was in remission for a while and everything was looking up then more tests revealed that the cancer was now in Haleigh's lungs. Now she faces months and months of chemotherapy treatments for her. Haleigh and her family still need assistance as the radiation treatments are now only beginning.
